This book has been written for all the members of the relation and friends to read and thereby obtain some knowledge of our family background. In particular, it is for the young people of our family, who should know this history and realize the heritage that is ours.
It is an account of the Hammersland and Lommen families as far into the past as information is known. It traces the ancestry back to Norway in each case and shows the various farms from whence our people came. The progress and achievements of the individuals are told. Included elsewhere in the website are a map of Norway showing our ancestral farms and a family tree that are useful and interesting in many instances.
It has been very educational and interesting to write this family history. Through this project I have become eager to know about my family and the type of life each member of it lived.
I acknowledge grateful appreciation to the following people who so kindly helped me get information for my family history.
Mr. Harold Hammersland West Union, Iowa
Mrs. Harold (Agnes) Hammersland West Union, Iowa
Mrs. Sam (Olava) Hammersland Ossian, Iowa
Barbra Lommen Ossian, Iowa
Mrs. Ben (Thora) Nelson Ossian, Iowa
My work on this book has instilled in me an even greater desire to delve deeper and learn more about my ancestry. I now have an unquenchable wish to go to Norway and see the land from which my forefathers emigrated. My hope for the readers of this narrative is that they, too, might become interested in their family history and begin immediately to search for information.
I have come to appreciate my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents more. Above all, I am thankful that they had the courage to make the hazardous ocean trip to America, whereby today I am a free and happy American.

To my father and mother, Mr & Mrs. Harold M. Hammersland, I dedicate this narrative of my family history, this year (1945) being their 25th wedding anniversary.
Agnes Theodora Lommen & Harold Martin Hammersland married on March 30, 1920.
